A Maternity Family Session: The Stryffeler Family

“To the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time.” – Clara Ortega

It is an amazing thing when your sibling has children. When I look at my brother I remember us as children. Our games and squabbles easily reached in my memories. I remember hours playing outside, making sure to come home when the streetlights turned on. I remember Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. I remember joy and being able to push each other’s buttons like no one else could.

Now he has chosen a beautiful wife who I am blessed to call sister. Together they have two children and entrusted me to capture their maternity family session. When I see his children have siblings of their own I cannot help but smile and wonder what stories they will one day share. One of the beautiful things about bringing the next generation into the world is being able to glimpse into a part of your past beyond your memory. I watch my niece and nephew interact and I know I am seeing glimmers of what my brother and I were like as toddlers. In a few days we will add another little boy to the mix and life for Ava will be much like it was for me, the only girl among two boys. As you will see from some of the images below she is still uncertain about all of this.

Our maternity family session was a celebration of siblings and anticipation of new life. As a new baby boy gets ready to enter this family everyone tries to figure out what that will be like. If it is anything like growing up was for me it will be a life that will “live outside the touch of time”.
