A Birth Story: Baby James
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something aboslutely new”. -Osho
This quote has always fascinated me with its simple yet profound truth. In every birth we rightfuly celebrate the wonder that is a brand new life. The wrinkles, the squinty eyes, the fuzzy shoulders, the pink skin, all signs and signals of a tiny, new human in a big world. Yet there is a equally new creature on the planet and that is the mother now in existance. With the birth of her first child a woman enters a new realm, embarks on a journey familiar to so many before her yet unknown to her. This was especially true during this birth. With tears and smiles and sighs of joy and relief, a woman who never thought she would bear the title of mother birthed a baby boy.
To be asked to tell her story is truly a joy! Baby James is certainly a little one with a mind and schedule of his own. After being induced for 49 hours this little one finally made his arrival via C-section. I was thrilled to be allowed into the back into the operating room at the very end to document the first time these two met face to face.
