This week marked the launch of the International Association of Birth Photographers’ annual birth photography competition. The goal of this is to highlight and recognize excellence in birth photography. Let me tell you, there is a lot of excellence out there! This year I decided to put myself out there and enter an image. While scary it was also such a great way to look back at the beauty of the births I got to document last year. You can see all the awe inspiring entries here. Can you guess which images is mine? Hint, I entered the postpartum category.
Going through these images reminded me of just how raw, vulnerable, and beautiful each woman is. Whether it is a hospital, a c-section birth or a home, every woman brings her unique strength and power to the birth experience. I am also struck by the various support systems that surround each birth. From husbands, to grandmas, to siblings and hospital staff, these unsung heroes of a birth story are by her side to welcome this tiny human. I love celebrating this truly once in a lifetime event.
So in honor of competition week I am sharing with you some of my favorites. Please enjoy the images below and if you are getting ready to add a little one to your family please consider documenting it. You will not regret having these images for years to come. I love what Jacqueline says about her decision to document baby James’ entrance into the world. “To have you document the most important moment of my life was a priceless gift to myself, my son and all of our loved ones. I love that I can enjoy and replay these moments over and over thanks to these images. I will always be thankful for this!!” Contact me today and we can talk through any fears or hesitations and dream of the moment you will meet your new love face to face.
