Best of 2017 | A Year In Review | Redlands Birth and Family Photography
I look forward to this post every year. The chance to pause and reflect on the journey and accomplishments, both personally and professionally, is one I appreciate as life so often blurs from one day into the next.
Personally, 2017 was a year of refining and redemption. After 2016 broke our hearts we welcomed our rainbow baby, Annalise Mina, with joyful hearts and open arms. She has been a true joy and the light of our life. We also moved from Los Angeles to Yucaipa to be with family. Living with my family has provided the opportunity for me to stay home full time with our little one during this first year of her life and it is a gift I will cherish forever. Blending three generations, four adults and 6 kids ages fourteen to 10 months, has been quite the adventure. As has adjusting to a new pace of life and trying to develop new relationships. We are looking forward to building on this foundation over the next year and really settling into life in the Inland Empire.
Moving 9 months pregnant, having a long and difficult labor and adjusting to first time motherhood, stretched and shattered my expectations in so many ways. I struggled with significant postpartum baby blues and anxiety. Bonding with my daughter was a slow and steady process and now 10 months in I am finally feeling settled into the role of motherhood. I am so grateful to my parents, husband and friends for speaking truth to me and helping me through some of my darkest days.
Professionally, moving and maternity leave essentially meant starting over. While I had the fewest sessions on the book since I started my business, each session was so incredibly meaningful and I found myself deeply connected to each family. This year saw several family sessions, both in home and around town, a New Beginnings session for a little one born just 8 days before my own little, a maternity session for dear friends expecting a rainbow baby, the birth of a beautiful baby boy and several opportunities to document my own family, It also included the most amazing and humbling opportunity to document the homecoming of a courageous woman who is overcoming being injured in the Las Vegas shooting.
Thank you all for being such a special part of my story, for your support and encouragement on this journey. I wish you all the love, joy, growth and goodness 2018 can bring.
I had the pleasure of meeting this amazing family right before we moved. They were so sweet and so patient with me as I was super pregnant!
This precious girl was my first session in our new hometown and I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off work life here than with a New Beginnings session.
In-home family documentary sessions have my heart! They are such a beautiful reflection of your life now and I cherish each family that allows me into their lives in such an intimate way.
I am so grateful for my Los Angeles clients who stuck by me and invited me back! It was a true joy to continue watching them grow.
My husband’s family welcomed another little one this year. Two grand babies in one year is so much fun! Documenting Annalise with her cousins is pure joy.
I also did my first in-home documentary maternity session and loved how personal these images are! They are so reflective of these two and the home their little girl was born into.
My favorite thing about moving my business was the chance to connect with NICU clients in this area. These families are so special to me and watching their little ones grow is a privilege.
Dancing with my dearest friends in Downtown Redlands to mark the beauty of their rainbow baby is something that is precious beyond words. Knowing how special this baby is to them and how special they are to me makes this art so much more meaningful.
This year also brought two opportunities to give back in ways I never imagined at the beginning of my career. First. I was invited to document the homecoming of Chelsea Romo, a mother and victim of the shooting in Los Vegas. Watching her courage and the support of her family and friends was a humbling honor. I also was chosen to participate as a photographer with the Together We Rise organization to document their annual Disneyland event. During this day they reunite foster siblings to enjoy a day together in the most magical place. Providing images for them to have an remember is a highlight of my career so far.
My last professional images of the year are of a dear new baby boy! Being part of a birth team that witnesses the first breaths of life, the joy of motherhood and the tears of relief of a father is a humbling miracle.
Personally, documenting my own family and friends is such a great opportunity to use my gifting to create a visual legacy of our own. From ballet recitals to park days to our life at home this is us and this is beautiful.
